A life as a ghost - Vestain 2ezs5mr

An ominous blue moon graced the black sky. Many horses thought it was magical, they thought it was beautiful despite the horror it brought with it. For Kratos it was more than just a wonderful appearence, he felt it deep into his veins. It aroused a desire, made his body shiver from head to toe. In normal circumstances he was just an ordinary horse, a black Frisian stallion. But once the blue moon appeared his body pumped with adrenaline and bloodthirstiness. Sort of as hij took to much from those 'muscle pills' and he was an overgrown bodybuilder. He started sweating 24 hours a day as if he ran for hours and hours. The look in his eyes wasn't uninterested anymore, on the contrary: he always watched the other horses with that murderous look, trying to find the right one to satisfy his needs, his hunger for blood and his longing to feel powerful. He heard the blood rushing through their veins and it made him hungry and uncontrollable.

Because of his sweating appearance, it was impossible to approach someone without getting caught. But that was the least of his worries: Kratos didn't mind getting noticed: it was all he wanted. To just see the looks in their eyes when he approached, when they knew they could die any moment, the fear - he could smell it from far.

Normally Kratos would stay in the forest and he would only attack if some lonely horse wandered off. This blue moon was different, he wanted to prove himself to Avanti, but mostly, he wanted to prove himself to himself. It was coincident that Vestain crossed his pad today. This was great, this would be his moment - one of the many that would follow. Kratos thought the horses would be smarter by now, how come this horse, Vestain, wasn't among the rest? He was so vulnerable, so... 'Alone,' echoed Kratos' voice through the silence. 'You're so lonely,' he clarified himself. Didn't you learn anything since you arrived, Vestain? Ofcourse Kratos knew his name. Kratos was the only Shade that was more of a spy than a murderer. He much more liked to drag a horse down by it's past than just let them beg for their lives - except for when the Blue Moon shone ofcourse, but that was a force he couldn't fight.

I heard you're pretty full of yourself, young stallion. Kratos nodded slowly. That's a pretty bad habit.

*I hope you can do something with it, I tried my best haha

* You're definitely a better writer than you think! That was great. x'D

It was a Blue Moon, the second one for Vestain to see upon his arrival in this land, and no less eerie than the first time it shone down upon his ebon mane. Vestain had been roaming about in Minanter at his leisure, bidding adieu to the rank one territory before finally moving permanently to his new home, the prosperous mountains of Anderfels. He had lingered a bit too long, though, he realized. His chat with Siouxsie had been cut very short, though it was probably for the best. She had needed to get back to the herd to be safe, and he, being ever the gentleman, had escorted her and then proceeded to make his way back up the mountains. He had taken his time though, and the night had caught up to him no matter how many steps he took, a cloak of darkness sneaking up from behind, shrouded in silence.
Vestain was not easy to surprise, though. The many years he spent in training and carrying out orders for his superiors had granted him the gift of awareness. He knew when a bird fluttered from one perch to another, even high overhead in the tall forests here. He could hear the snapping of a twig when a squirrel grasped for a berry just out of reach, so that it had to fall forward and land noisily. With each hoot, he knew exactly where the owl was swooping down, preying upon little mice darting to and fro beneath swaying underbrush. Nature was all in tune to his senses, as if the two were old friends who knew each other so well, getting reacquainted wasn't an issue. They could begin talking whenever they pleased as if no time had passed at all. The streams are full today, the squirrels are eating lunch and dropping nutshells out of trees to clang upon the forest floor, a doe is heading to her den where her little fawn naps innocently, the forest seemed to whisper to him. I know, he whispered back.
The blue moon made all of that change, and it unsettled him. Suddenly life was not present, the forest's voice was muffled and far away. Something unnatural possessed the land upon the arrival of the blue orb in the night sky, and it scared anything with life in it away. No wonder horses seemed so terrified upon its arrival...Vestain had never experienced anything like the way the land was cut off from its voice as it was now, before. He wasn't exactly frightened; his training would never allow him to be scared in all honestly. Panic was the enemy, it made one do things that they would normally deem unwise and foolish. Acting out of fear would never help, in the end, and he had learned to maintain a stolid grip upon control and logic. There was always a way to think oneself out of a situation, always.
The scent hit him hardest, an acidic tang that wreaked of sweat and foulness. The putrid stench grew more and more vile as the thing got nearer, so that by the time the voice echoed out into the darkness, Vestain was already aware that he was about to meet one of the infamous shades. Setting his jaw in a hard line, he rounded and stared at the creature. It was almost like looking at a mirror image of himself, though the shade had no silvery markings, and his eyes gleamed something terrible. He seemed frenzied, like he was unstable and yet totally in control both at the same time. He could pounce at any moment, yet he shivered as if he might slither to the ground and crumple up. The shade knew his name, but that was hardly a surprise. The way they lurked about no doubt gave them plenty of time to figure out who everyone was beforehand. It was clever, a surefire way to get an upper-hand in their scare tactics, but Vestain had seen it all before. This shade had power, and was a threat, but it was not because of his wit, Vestain was assured. His last sentence Vestain found odd. 'It's strange that you've heard so much about me when I've only spoken to two of the horses who live here. Unless they all talk about me when I'm not around, in which case I would have a good right to be full of myself, don't you think?' He tilted his head at the shade, maintaining a stoney gaze while remaining utterly still. His muscles were hot and alert, though, and if he needed to lunge or dodge, then he was perfectly capable of doing so. Talking was the best means of distraction, though, and so he went for that tactic first. 'Tell me, why pick a stallion as your target? Yes, I am alone, but surely it would be easier to find some lone yearling without any means of protection, lost and terrified beneath these haunting blue rays?' He knew what the answer would be, where was the fun in an easy catch? Half of the fun was the chase, the game. But he asked anyways. That was the way this game had to be played.

A life as a ghost - Vestain 2ezs5mr

A maniacal laugh echoed and paused in the air for a few seconds. A laugh as if Kratos just escaped from a madhouse, because that was everything what he represented: a mad man. Those types that just don't seem to be able to ever recover and you would rather kill than reintroduce them to society, they would only harm others. He had no ability to live among the normal horses and act like them. Not even when the blue moon disappeared - the young stallion knew no emotions at all. He never felt them. Since birth he disgust towards those who laughed and cried or even felt anger. Kratos didn't even feel anger nor hate. It were emotions, it were strong words with a meaning which he never fully understood or experienced. Like the wires in his brain didn't connect the right way. He once dreamed of emotions, wished the wires of his brain would slowly reconnect and he could be normal. But he gave up when others started to mistreat him just because of what he is - or isn't. Was it his fault he just didn't understand them? Was it his fault everything the other horses did seamed so... So strange? They had no right to pick on him like that. They were closed minded: if they couldn't see a flesh wound, you weren't ill. A mental illness? Don't let them laugh! It's only a weakness, it doesn't exist, and they told Kratos to just 'get over himself'. Get over what? This no-feelings were all he ever knew, what was there to 'just get over'?
'You don't need to be famous to be known,' there was a small grin on his lips. It didn't explain anything: he could be impressed by the calm words of the stallion as much as he could just be bored or impatient. Words were nothing in his eyes. Because words had emotions, to have a conversation, you needed to feel something, experience laughter or fear. In this case the words were just there to rack the moment. But if that was what Vestain wanted, why not? There was plenty of time and Kratos had no hurry. 'Why would I hunt down a foal or a yearling? It aren't them who fight us. Sure, they are afraid, but they are no threat. Stallions keep this herd going'. He said as he lowered his voice. 'And it's not the horses we want to destroy, Vestain. It's the herd.'
Now that was said - and in Kratos opinion there was enough said - he straightened his neck and threw his head into the air, looking at him from above. In any other case than the blue moon this would look like an action to impress, but not now. He was looking at him impudently, letting his eyes slide over him. 'Though none of you horses is a real threat to us, you surely are one to get rid of. We don't want any troubles in the future, do we?'

The shades words were like shadows clouding up Vestain's vision. He could still see through them to the beast behind the shroud, but lines were blurring together and his senses were beginning to slow, not as quick to react. He needed to move, to get his adrenaline pumping in order to ward off the spell the shade was casting over him. He carefully edged sideways, his hooves pawing the earth defensively as he did so. He eyed the shade warily as the shadows kept spewing forth from its lips. He wondered if somewhere deep inside there was a salvageable soul still intact, small and cold, but kept in captivity by the curse that possessed the shade's blood and flesh. If there was somehow a way to help the shades, he would find it, he told himself. It wasn't going to be something that could be done overnight, but perhaps the solution was not to simply kill them all. The horses here had been trying that for years, or so he was told, and it was obviously not working.
The shade's words finally made sense in his mind, after a delay, and then he formed a response. 'That makes sense, of course. But still, I have to wonder how destroying me will accomplish anything. I have no power, nobody even truly knows me. My death would do nothing to the herd.' He would change that though. The thought of Delaney flitted through his consciousness briefly...she knew him, and she would care. Or at least he hoped she would. Still, she was the only other horse in the land who had any clue as to who he was. The leaders, the real threats to the shades, didn't know him yet. That was why he was unimportant to this shade, and what he was attempting to portray. He laid his ears back flat at the shade's sinister tone. 'You don't frighten me, shade. I have looked death right in the eye before. Do you want to know the impressive part to that story? He looked away first. So, I say to you the same thing I say to death: Not today.'
